Pros and Cons
Pros
Lots of crowd control.
AoE heal that can be spammed.
Great initiation with W + Q combos.
Great ability to peel for allies with Q and W.
Naturally tanky with his R which allows him to dive and tank towers easily.
Cons
Hard to get correct positioning for abilities.
W + Q Combos are a vital part of playing him and can be messed up easily which leaves you high and dry.
Will take a lot of damage in team fights so knowing when to use your ultimate is key.
A problem with that, is that you'll make Q cost significantly more mana, which can be troublesome. I believe that's the main counter-argument with that idea.
You can get 10% CDr with new masteries and alistar rly benefits from that! If i die with Alistar, its often because im on CD, i play him for 2 years.
9 Points in Defense of course are superb, but you can also get a lot of sustain by taking BOTH HP/regen masteries, and because i often play 21 Armor Runes(red+yellow) and exhaust, my masteries are 5/3/21 The main supporter of TSM often played 1/3/26 Alistar before S3. it is worth a thought. Edit: i totally agree with new items listened above, if your game is going bad, legion/runic bulkwark is a good idea.

I've found that Ashe works both as a Counter and a great synergy for Ali. Her slow can make it a huge pain to close on the enemy when she's against you, but when she's on your side it can make chasing a low health champ much easier for a Pulv/HB easy kill.
I would assume this works for most folks with slows (like Nunu or, of course, Janna) but I find Ashe to be the worst/best with her easily sustained slow without the need for Red Buff or Phage/FM.
I think these counters and synergies are aimed mostly at the laning phase, wherein Vayne isn't THAT much of a threat to Ali, as long as his positioning is solid.

I take something similar to what is listed above if I think the lane will be more passive.

I use 3x Avarice Quints
8x Avarice Seals
1x Armor Seal
This makes it 5.0gold/5sec instead of 5.25gold/5sec. So I think the 1 avarice seal isn't needed.
