Item Build
Starting Items
I think in Season 3 the best way to open with Gangplank is with a flask, fairie charm, vision ward, health potion and mana potion. The reason for this is he is very mana reliant to supplement his laning phase, it's a very safe opener and it protects you from the jungler. With all that sustain and mana sustain you're nearly impossible to kill in lane. The mana sustain also helps to do the aforementioned if you choose to max Remove Scurvy.
Core Items
I feel like these days, if you're equally skilled to your opponent, the most reasonable build to do is a tankplank build. He achieves this by first buying a Sunfire Cape, as it actually helps him be a pusher and he can pressure the map with it. Then you'll want to buy a Frozen Mallet so that your Parrrley will always catch whomever you shoot. It also makes you a wall that nobody can get past, so you'll always be the primary focus in a fight. Don't hesitate to buy a Doran's Sword if you need it to sustain through early game. Pirate has a ton of different builds, however and Trinity Force is amazing on him. If you're doing exceptionally well, you should build more carry oriented.
Endgame Items
You should finish out your build with a bit more utility and damage, you achieve that by buying a Shurelya's Reverie, which helps you get into range of your Parrrley to catch people with Frozen Mallet. Frozen Heart is just an amazing aura item that makes you tanky and will keep you sustained in a fight by giving you a massive CDR boost on Remove Scurvy. It's even optional to buy an item such as Wit's End a bit sooner in the game just to dominate your laning opponent, but this item provides the necessary MR and damage that you lack from building full tank. This makes for a very well-rounded Pirate build that helps you to control the flow of the game.

Posted 6/19/2013 6:37:56 AMI think this is very good build. But I prefer statik shiv instead of wit's end. I buy philospher and avarice blade as first 2 items. Combined with parrley even enemy outfarm me I have hell of a golds and both items can be upgraded very good items too... I don't build statik early to get more gold from avarice. After philospher and avarice I buy frozen mallet. Of course I take boots somewhere here. You don't actually need boots early at gp he is quite fast. After Frozen Mallet I go sunfire cape then I build statik. So it's like :
Phisopher stone - Avarice Blade - (optional boots) - Giant's belt or Phaege - Frozen Mallet - (if you didn't get boots til now get them make it level 2) - Giants belt or Chain vest (depending on which one you need first) - Sunfire Cape - Statik Shiv - Glacial Shroud - Shurelya - Frozen Heart
I didn't It's better to have statik shiv instead of Wit's End. Because Avarice Blade is AMAZING early game combinated with parrley and philospher stone (even better if you have TF in mid) and critical hits are better than Wit's End's bonus damage and mr for me. You can crit pretty much with statik shiv and it is enough. Even on lane through Avarice Blade you will crit sometimes and it helps A LOT.

Posted 6/16/2013 6:03:52 PMPersonally, i am a fan of building crit early, thus them into Statik getting Avarice Blade and Zeal, and combine them into Statikk Shiv. This boosts the chance of me taking advantage of my Q's ability to get me richer. Following this item, would be a Warmogs and Atma's Impaler. This keeps my damage on par with others whilst having a decent amount of health. I'd get a Frozen Mallet or Sunfire after this, and top it off with Infinty Edge to frighten enemy carries :) Boots depends on enemy team comp, but I enjoy Mobility or Swiftness :D

Posted 6/11/2013 2:52:21 PMPersonally I am a Critplank player, but I am not ranked or anything so I know that he isn't as viable as tankplank, but Critplank has kind of become my top lane trump card for when I want an easy win, I usually start with Brawlers and 2 pots, build an avarice and boots and turn the avarice into a shiv. Then I get another avarice for more crit and cash, and build an IE after upgrading my boots to berserker. The next part of my build is dependant on how the game is going, I will get phantom dancer if I am just facerolling, if not I grab the Atmog combo (using the avarice I bought earlier in the atma recipe). Either way I end up getting both of those, just depends on the order. At the beginning of the game I focus my Parrrley's on last hitting much more than harassing, I start to harass when I get a little higher level and have the mana. In normals this does very very well, but I am aware that in ranked it would probably be a different story.

Posted 6/14/2013 2:30:48 AMJust tweak your build into more damage. an ie instead of a phantom dancer really helps out ur mid game. crit plank is perfectly viable tho, as long as you build the right items at the right time. rushing shiv is damn near a free lane win.

Posted 4/17/2013 2:03:02 PMI know critplank isn't opted for much now days, however I've been doing really well with this new build...
Not in build order but > Merc Treads or Ninja Tabi, Statik Shiv, Warmogs, IG... and then optional between IE, Atmas, FM, Hydra, LW (IF you don't need to be as tanky).
Usually I go;
Avarice Blade
Sheen
Ninja Tabi (or merc treads)
stat shiv (clears waves quick and good ms)
IG
Mogs (IG and mogs switched around depending on situation)
IE
And end with either LW, FM, Hydra and possibly atmas (all depends on if you don't need to be as tanky or not.)
Great movement speed (that helps proc Shiv easily), Aoe crit pokes that also slow enemies down a lot from passive and items and tanky with great dmg.

Posted 4/1/2013 6:15:25 AMi realize all build are situational..
ever tried merc treads, thornmal, randuins omen, statikk shiv, trinity force, maw of malmortius.
just tried it.. won game with it..
got shut down by kha thanks to zac coming and giving him fb cause i got ignited and barely made it out..
i started with philo and avarice blade. so i could passively farm q and get rich quick.. how ever udyr and kha did dive me to kill then kha could just dive so i built giants belt and thornmail..
from then on out i felt prett safe no one would really fuck with me no more unless it was there whole team.. i was gaining gold like crazy

Posted 2/24/2013 5:33:20 AMI saw nobody so far mention the fact that IG allows you to Q the whole wave and get at once x6 the bonus gold which is pretty big actually after lvl 9 that you can do it all the time and get an extra 48g.

Posted 2/17/2013 6:32:24 PMI've been running this exact same build, with the exceptions that I go 9/21 and I dont get philosopher stone if against a hyper aggressive high damage lane. esp now that so many people that go top like this new 9 pots start meta thing I see happening. oh yeah and i max w first. tankplank farms safely enough and w doesnt have scaling mana costs, whereas q does, and falls off damage wise anyway. my skilling is w>e>q. i dont really miss the bonus gold income, since your ult, sunfire and tp allows you to split push and farm up hard anyway. worst case scenario in lane (pre sunfire), i break even in cs with no kills on either side, and an extra 300 gold in my pocket from farming with my level 1 q. then i get sunfire cape, all in them, and burst heal for like 360 after they blew all their cds. and chop them to death with my passive and sunfire dot.

Posted 2/17/2013 6:23:03 PMa good lot of people do ibg that still play gp. I've done them both, and personally, for my money, mallet is better. for instance, item sequencing. since the build is philo>sunfire... by the time you get that, teamfights will be starting probably. now you have the choice of a LITTLE extra burst and utility, but very little in the way of tankiness since armor pen is so popular. and to top it off, the ibg doesnt really kite that well except for the person hit by the sheen proc. so its not like you'll be kiting entire teams because you have that aoe slow. frozen mallet on the other hand is much better mid game. you still get the guaranteed slow, more ad to auto attack with, and a MASSIVE chunk of hp (very important for the magic damage you will be tanking)
and take into account that this is a tankplank build. you cant peel for a carry if all u have to offer is a 21 percent mspd slow and ibg procs. frozen mallet will really keep a people at bay. auto one guy to slow him down, parley another. your adc will be in safe hands.
if all you'll be doing is split pushing wih ibg procs and sunfire cape tho, then it does work pretty damn well.
but if i want cdr, i'd prefer FH, shurelyas,or hell, even locket is better imo. gp isnt a "kill everything" champ anymore. he makes sure his carries can carry him. with sunfire and wits, you will still do enough damage to tank and kill squishies, and with items like shurelyas and locket, you can make sure your squishies are still killing.
