Rune Summary
Marks: Greater Mark of Desolation -or- Greater Mark of Strength -or- Greater Mark of Might
Seals: Greater Seal of Vitality -or- Greater Seal of Resilience
Glyphs: Greater Glyph of Warding -or- Greater Glyph of Shielding
Quintessence: Greater Quintessence of Strength -or- Greater Quintessence of Desolation
Marks
Gangplank's only damage source is his auto attack, Parrrley (Q) and Cannon Barrage (R). You'll definitely want armor penetration or AD marks.
Seals
The best choices for Seals on Gangplank are to have either armor or hit point per level. The choice generally comes from who you're laning against. If you're against a physical damage dealer, you'll definitely want armor. Against an ability power champion you'll want hit points per level.
Glyphs
For glyphs there's only choosing between scaling magic resistance and flat magic resistance for Gangplank. You generally want flat if you're paranoid you will die to an AP in the early phases of the game.
Quintessence
Armor penetration quintessences are the best way to abusively zone with Gangplank. You don't have to play a zoning style at all, but it absolutely cripples a solo laner. If you really absolutely want to maximize your damage and you know your target will have below 21 armor early, you can do flat attack damage quintessences. This will give you 7 damage on your level 1 parley, which could do more than armor penetration. Armor penetration cannot reduce a champions' armor below zero, so there are points in the game it can have literally no effect.
Masteries
Typically top lane does not get the buffs as often in game, so that leads to a mastery path straying away from buff utility, generally. Gangplank will be your tankline, so you want to be as burly as you possible can be.
Summoner Spells
or
Flash is a must. It is the best escape summoner in the game. There's a reason Ghost has been seen a lot less commonly in competitive games and that's because it is just an inherently weaker escape skill. It's a much rarer situation that flashing over a wall won't get you out as opposed to Ghost. Ghost also does surprisingly little due to movement speed diminishing returns during your Raise Morale.
Gangplank is basically permanently ghosted just from the passive from Raise Morale., it seems wiser to me to fill the gap with a flash rather than a bit of boosted movement speed.
Ignite can really supplement Gangplanks's burst damage with a Parrrley (Q) and Grog-Soaked Blade. A lot of times, champions are completely helpless to the oncoming gunshot only to die a fiery death to ignite. If you get within Parrrley (Q) range, you just may have died from a critical strike Parrrley (Q) to ignite combo.
Teleport has a massive amount of team utility so that you can be present in any team fight. I kind of feel like Gangplank has enough mobility to simply walk to dragons. The decision, however, is up to you. If you feel like you're losing dragons because you didn't take teleport, you should certainly have it.

Posted 12/19/2012 3:53:03 AMA few observations having played quite a bit of tankplank after viewing this guide.
- In a tough lane it's worth rushing Philostone, you already start fae charm anyway and more than likely move into Shurelya's mid game so it's certainly a worth investment.
- I find the Mana potion in the starting items kinda pointless, fae charm and the 50% refund of parley's cost is enough to keep you in lane.
- AD quints seem necessary to even attempt to trade in lane and make for more comfortable last hitting.
- Spirit Visage is definitely worth a note in the items section, after laning vs a nid and a rumble top it was brilliant, going philostone into visage kept me comfortably in the game, and the passive life gain from the visage is kinda quirky with oranges.
- I was dubious about Sunfire Cape but now I'm definitely sold on it in the right situations, for new players reading this guide don't take the item build as set in stone, cape is really solid if you're in a tough lane vs and ad, but it can definitely be left until early-mid game/late-mid game
- Teleport is definitely my summoner of choice 80% of the time, unless you feel like you crush your lane opponent or they have Mundo jungle, Swain mid or maybe even a Vlad, I don't feel this play style of GP warrants running ignite, going mainly utility and defensive tree you don't have the retarded Parley damage you do going 21 offensive and going crit route, Teleport gives you good map pressure along side your pushing power with Sunfire Cape and can really swing dragon fights and random enemy roams bottom.
I'm only a 1600 player so it's not like my advice is massively relevant but I'd like to think people would be able to take some useful information from the above, none the less this guide is brilliant and really improved my GP, have fun parleying and eating oranges to make everything k.

Posted 12/5/2012 8:57:57 PMNot sayin I know more than SYDTKO, but is tankplank even very viable any more as compared to a more damaging Gangplank focused on de critz?
My build for offensive Gangplank
Boots 3 pots
double dorans
begin tri-force with phage, then sheen, then zeal and finish
IE
either Sunfire Cape or warmogs for health
Atma's (yes I know it's bad, but it's worthwhile for GP when going offensive but semi-tanky)
QSS, now the machete thing (forget name now)
You end up destroying the entire team with critz and Parrrley hits for 3/4th's of their adc/apc's health.

Posted 11/4/2012 3:23:09 AMI was hoping someone could answer this question, it's a tad bit random. I was watching the TSM invitational and noticed in one of Orb vs. Dignitas, nien played GP and picked up an early Tiamat. I thought it was a really strange item to pick up at first until I thought, what if Parrrley's gold passive applied to aoe damage. Hypothetically speaking, if you took out multiple creeps with one parrrley, does the gold multiply?

Posted 11/5/2012 4:40:03 PMGreat! I actually got a little antsy and tried it out myself too. If the game lasts long enough, you end up one shotting jungle camps, and creepwaves. Great economical item for GP! I also realized that tiamat would make many of the single target bruiser like tops much more viable in the jungle. I love junglers like wukong, xin zhao, and even GP on occasion. Opting in for a tiamat rather than a wriggles would allow a much fast clear.

Posted 10/21/2012 12:17:56 PMI don't see pantheon as a real counter to gangplank. Just play passive in lane and pantheon is useless then.
If u are planning to go for a kill in lane be sure to auto attack pantheon once and then Q him so his passive is off when auto attacked.
Just remember U are much more usefull through out the game then pantheon. No kills for pantheons will be a useless pantheon.

Posted 1/14/2013 8:53:47 PMyou cant play passive with gp against pantheon cause then pantheon will just kill him and gp wont get farm.. if pantheon is smart and builds a tear of the goddess first.. he can literally free farm on gp and just stab him with spears all day.. their q's have the same range so why pantheon is farming if gp even thinks about q'ing a minion pantheon just stabs him with a spear.. what are you going to heal? theres your mana.. you going to pistol him theres a block.. gps cd on q is 5seconds pantheons shield is 4hits/abilities.. pantheon builds a zyphr and he'll auto attack to much for gp to even think about auto attacking pantheon and then fallow up with a q.. and a good pantheon would wait for him to run and use his heal to stun with his GAP closer... most champs with gap closers can counter gp pretty hard if they play right.. but if gp plays right he can make them regret it late game besides pantheon... pantheon is gp's biggest counter... that very low cd on spears makes pantheon out harass gp his passive makes it where gp cant harass him and his stun is a good gap closer to seal the kill on gp.. im good with gp but i do not want to go against gp... after i finish my runes for gp im going to play a rank game with gp hoping that the other top dont pick after me... if they do and its pantheon i just better hope my mid will go top and let me mid to help out the team so i can actually snowball in farm and kills/assist from my ult on other lanes... a good way way to play gp is just farm your q and ult other lanes for kills/assist

Posted 1/15/2013 12:06:17 PMIn the state pantheon is in now then I agree to that.
When I talked about pantheon before that was in season 2.
In season 2 Pantheon did not had the benefits he has now with black cleaver.
So yes I agree that pantheon counters gp now.

Posted 9/26/2012 3:14:11 PMReally I can't understand why Jax counters Gp. He can't dodge all parrrleys, Gp's Remove Scurvy avoid his stun and Raise Morale can bring him out of Jax's range. So, why? Can anyone explain me?

Posted 10/4/2012 9:49:20 AMI think Jax is a counter because of his higher burst. Gp cant stant a straight 1on1 fight to Jax and Jax can block Parley with his E and follow that up with his QW. GP's W is on higher CD as Jax's Counter Strike as well. GP has no big burst til he got some crit chance, so Jax harass potential is bigger even tho he has to get in melee range.
