The Laning Phase
Gragas has an easy laning phase and you shouldn't be too concerned unless you're against things like Talon, Akali, Irelia, Gangplank, or Katarina. He can easily farm using his Barrel Roll (Q) from a long distance and at a certain point it can instantly kill the range minion wave. Eventually, with enough ability power, it will kill the entire wave in just one Barrel Roll (Q). Gragas can easily stay safe and escape ganks with his Body Slam (E) which is a blink-like ability that also deals damage to anything he collides with. You should also spam your Drunken Rage (W) so that you get your Happy Hour going as long as possible. The mana return and the damage reduction helps Gragas lane a whole lot as well, so if it's not on cooldown, it should be. Use it at every chance you get. It's also important to note that you can use it when you start a body slam.
Gragas' ultimate, Explosive Cask, knocks enemys in the direction outward from the initial explosion. It can be used to save yourself from ganks or to insure kills with your jungler.
Gragas's farming is actually exceptionally easy, just throw a barrel when creeps are low and blow it up. The only nuance to this is to control the creep line so that you're not overextending early before you have your body slam to escape. This means that early levels unless they are pushing, you want to aim barrels to only hit the creeps you intend to last hit, so that you are not pushing too much. When you're level 9, you can easily clear the whole wave with a Barrel Roll (Q) and Body Slam (E).
Gragas has one of the strongest pokes in the game with Barrel Roll (Q). With the massive range on his Barrel Roll (Q) and Explosive Cask (R) combo, he can generally instantly kill low magic resistance opponents with this, let alone the fact that it will put them in position to likely die to your allies.
Strength: Mobility, Range, and Utility
Gragas's Body Slam gives him massive mobility and is on a low cooldown. With the combination of his long range and ult that dispositions enemies, he can easily initiate any fight. Gragas almost always has the decision of where he will position as well as he's not easily crowd controlled. The combination of these three things with high burst damage can also mean that you can instantly assassinate many high priority champions that would normally be hiding in the back behind their tanks. It is also important to note that Barrel Roll (Q) has a passive effect of slowing opponent's attack speed if they are struck by the explosion.
Gragas, unless he's initiating a fight with Explosive Cask (R), should be near the outside due to his long range. He can just sit back and throw barrels into the mix while his allies crowd control or try to run away. If your team composition makes sense that you want to keep distance, which most compositions do with Gragas, you should use your barrel to protect your ranged carry when they try to dive or rush them down.
Gragas generally plays defensively in lane until he has his ultimate. You can throw barrels to poke or to farm creeps. Getting crowd controlled for a short period can mean you'll survive due to his Drunken Rage, however, you're best just avoiding that completely. You have the choice on when to engage, when to retreat and how a fight starts.
Harassing with Ultimate when you Have Blue
You should be harassing with your ultimate when you have blue and you are seiging or being seiged on tower. Tell your team in advance not to go on your ultimate unless it catches someone. Let them know your going to use it to harass. The cooldown on your ultimate is so low its fine. Just wait the 1 min or 30 seconds until its back up (depending on level and items)
Gragas generally wants to blast the attack damage carry or the ability power carry to the front line or blast the tank to the back line. He can maintain a safe distance while doing this and also throw Barrel Rolls at the same time. As Gragas, you really need to understand how the game has been going to understand who is a threat. If their attack damage carry is a big threat, which they normally are, they are your primary target. If you've snowballed hard enough and free farmed, you can sometimes instantly kill them with a Barrel Roll and Explosive Cask. That's part of Gragas assassin-like gameplay.'
However, if you can't win a fight without killing their tanks you have to play a different style of protecting your attack damage dealer. If there are any melees trying to rush your damage dealers down, you should use your Body Slam on them to protect your carries and knock them away with Explosive Cask. Always keep in mind that your Barrel Roll massively slows attack speed, so you should probably already aim it at the enemy team's physical damage dealers. If they lose 40% of their auto attack damage your tanks will survive much longer than normal.
Tips and Tricks
- Use Body Slam in conjuction with Barrel Roll or Explosive Cask for fast initiations. You can actually hide your cast animation on Barrel Roll if you're mid Body Slam.
- You should also use Drunken Rage during your Body Slam animation as it'll take up some of the channel time.
- Remember you can Body Slam over thin walls for a speedy escape or a guaranteed initiation on someone hiding under a tower.
- You can play some ridiculous tricks with Gragas like throwing out your Barrel Roll as a zoning tool, throwing your Explosive Cask so they fly into the Barrel, detonating it and body slamming into them. It's really hard to pull off, but amazing when you do.
- Throwing out Barrel Roll on your opponent and Explosive Cask and timing their explosions together can create catastrophic results. Practice this combo.
Gragas has problems with champions like Sion in lane, he also has issues with the assassins like Akali, Katarina, Talon and others. Gangplank is a very direct counter to Gragas, but it's not a hard counter. Gragas can still pull out things like Cloth + 5 Potions as an opener and still be able to farm or use summoner Teleport to win lane. Gragas is an incredibly safe champion and can do well in the vast majority of situations. None of the counters to him are really hard counters. Regardless of your opponent, Gragas should always be able to have a significant impact on the game provided you play well.
