Strategy and Tactics
Early game you should try to last hit, so you don't get ganked easily. You want to avoid using spells on the creep. The only time you should try to use spells on creeps is when you want to back out of your lane, go gank another lane, gank the jungle and do objectives around the map. As Malzahar you should have one of the highest creep score in the game. As early game transitions into early mid – game. You should start obtaining blue buff and push as hard as you can with the map WARDED.
Harassment tags along with the last hitting aspect. When you are last hitting, try to cast spells on the enemy champion to prevent them from last hitting and having them in their comfort zone. Remember not to over harass, or you will be up in front of the enemy allowing the enemy jungler to gank you. When you feel unsafe harassing, just back off to your tower area. When your enemy is around 30% HP, try landing a silence + Malefic visions and ignite early game. If you are 6 add Nether grasp to it.
Damage Over Time
Malzahar is not a bursty champion. The only thing that Malzahar has that has burst is his silence. Making you a damage over time champion makes disadvantage fights and out of positioned fights really hard for you. This is why I mention positioning is key with Malzahar. With those disadvantages, Malzahar excels really well in 1v1 fights because he has no one to interrupt him while using a channeled ult. Up to 5v5 fights he does well, unless he gets Crowd Controlled to death which again, positioning is key.
Picking a Suppression Target
Malzahar's great power lies in suppression and damage. With great power comes great responsibility. The reason I mention that spider-man quote is because if you don't use your ultimate correctly, it will screw over your team. If you ultimate a tank and he doesn't die, you screwed them over. If you didn't nether grasp the AD carry while he is flying in front of your team's face, you screwed them over. In order of you want to suppress:
2) Initiators (Tanks / Junglers / Support)
Team fights is where Malzahar becomes the game maker or the game breaker. Unlike other AP carries, you can just throw your abilities at people without fear of being interrupted. You must, however, make sure to ultimate the right target. NEVER ultimate a target that you can't kill.
You want to silence supports and casters most of the time in a team fight. If you can pull it off correctly. and well, you have easily won the team fight. You got the AP caster unable to do anything but move. They cannot cast any spells and flash away because they are silenced and absolutely useless.
You want to use Null Zone (W) with your Nether Grasp (R) to destroy tanks, or Null Zone (W) in the middle of the fight with a strong initiator like Amumu or Galio.
Use Malefic Visions (E) on squishy enemies during the fight.
Don't FACECHECK! Use your Call of the Void (Q) when you are thinking about walking through a bush after early game. Consider what might happen! Use Call of the Void to check for enemies like junglers during the laning phase. This can prevent you from a death!
Tips and Tricks
Maximum Damage Combo
To do the maximum damage with Malzahar:
1. Have your voidling ready
2. Silence your target with Call of the Void (Q)
4. Null Zone (W) -> Malefic Visions (E) -> Nether Grasp (R)
Getting a Hextech Revolver after purchasing your 2 Doran's Rings allow you to sustain in lane. Even if you are low hp, you can just regenerate it all back by using Malefic Visions (E) on a minion line.
Malzahar can spam his abilities on a creep wave and still get XP/gold even if he is away from that creep wave.
Synergies and Counters
Team composition wise, Malzahar paired with other crowd control heroes are amazing. For example, Amumu is a great choice because he hold down the enemy team and you can just place a Null Zone (W) and have a lot of time to Nether Grasp (R) a target. Another one would be Morgana because she can spell shield you as you Nether Grasp (R) so you cannot get interrupted during the channeling phase. A great jungler like Warwick helps too because it is nearly impossible to get away from double suppression unless the enemy has a Quicksilver Sash.
Malzahar's primary counter is simply crowd control. Any type of crowd control that can interrupt Malzahar will render him useless. Champions like LeBlanc and Kassadin destroy Malzahar because when Malzahar is silenced, he is useless. To avoid all of the counters is stay in position and as mentioned before in the guide, your positioning is key Another counter to Malzahar is Quicksilver Sash (QSS). When used, the ultimate is canceled and it will do a minimum damage of one tick. Depending how fast the enemies reaction on the QSS, you will still do a bit of damage, but no suppression.
