Skill Order and Passive: Sap Magic
Q Arcane Smash
W Twisted Advance
E Sapling Toss
R Vengeful Maelstrom
You can choose to level Q at level 3 over E. Leveling E at level 3 helps you jungle a bit faster however leveling Q makes you better in prolonged fights and slows for a bit more.
- Sap Magic
- Each time a spell is cast near Maokai he draws energy from it, gaining a charge of Magical Sap. When Maokai has 5 charges his next basic attack heals him for a percentage of his max Health.
Maokai’s passive is only useful during the laning phase to add more sustainability as long at you or your opponent are casting spells. When you see it with all 5 charges, use it when you if you need it.
Note: It doesn’t consume the charges if you are at full life, with all 5 charges.
Q: Arcane Smash
- Arcane Smash
- Maokai releases an arcane shockwave. Nearby enemies are knocked back and all affected enemies take 70/115/160/205/250 (+0.4*AP) magic damage and are slowed by 20/27/34/41/48% for 1.5 seconds.
- 45 Mana
- 6/6/6/6/6 Seconds
Even though enemies are knocked back for a short distance, they are still stopped in their tracks for about half a second, so Arcane Smash (Q) can be counted as a formidable type of crowd control. The spell goes in a straight line, and is an AoE. If you have the chance, use this to push the enemy back to where you can deal more damage to them. The knock-up from Arcane Smash (Q) hits all targets in a very short range around him. This makes it way easier to aim with it in close ranged battles. In addition, the knock up is not just infront of him, it is around him, thus you are still able to damage and knock up enemies that are behind you when you cast Arcane Smash.
W: Twisted Advance
- Twisted Advance
- Maokai transforms into a cloud of arcane energy that quickly travels to a target enemy, roots it for 1/1.3/1.5/1.8/2 second(s) and deals 9/10/11/12/13 (+0.03*AP)% of the target's maximum health as magic damage (Max: 300 to minions and monsters).
- 75 Mana
- 13/12/11/10/9 Seconds
Although Twisted Advance (W) has great potential to net you a kill, it also has a possibility to get you killed. It is very similar to Master Yi’s Alpha Strike in the sense that you are ‘teleporting’ to your enemy, but it has a much slower cast speed allowing your opponent enough time to flash into safety the of their tower or their team, thus be careful of using this skill close to an enemy tower on an enemy with Flash or a blink as you might die to the combined power of the tower and the enemy, especially if they have a hard crowd control to deny you from Flashing out. Although the skill has a slow cast speed, this skill is Maokai’s ‘gap closer’ and allows you to chase an enemy.
E: Sapling Toss
- Sapling Toss
- Maokai flings a sapling that deals 40/60/80/100/120 (+0.4*AP) magic damage on impact.
The sapling wards the nearby area, and will chase enemies that approach, exploding to deal 80/120/160/200/240 (+0.6*AP) magic damage and slow enemies hit by 50% for 1 second(s). Saplings last for 35 seconds.
- 60/70/80/90/100 Mana
- 12/12/12/12/12 Seconds
At level one, your Sapling Toss (E) is very useful for starting at Wraiths or the enemy Wraiths. Sapling Toss (E) is Maokai’s main damage ability. It has two AP ratios, one for the damage caused when the sapling lands, and the other for when it runs towards your opponent and explodes. During the laning phase it can be used to zone your opponent away from their minions. When this skill reaches level 3, you can destroy all of the caster minions with one sapling toss. Sapling Toss (E) can be used also to set up temporary wards in bushes or entrances. Sapling Toss (E) often leaves your enemy scrambling backwards to try and avoid the damage. Unfortunately, Sapling Toss' damage can be avoided however by running into minions. Due to the Sapling giving vision, you can throw it into a bush in order to get vision and follow up with Twisted Advance in a gank.
R: Vengeful Maelstrom
- Vengeful Maelstrom
- Toggle: Maokai surrounds himself with a magical vortex that protects him and allied champions by reducing damage from non-turret sources by 20% for up to 10 seconds.
Maokai can end the effect to release the stored energy, dealing 100/150/200 (+0.5*AP) (+2 per damage absorbed) magic damage to enemies within the vortex. Maokai can store up to 100/150/200 bonus damage.
- 40 Mana, 30 Mana Per Second
- 60/50/40 Seconds
This skill should be used when a battle begins. Many people do not realize what this spell is actually doing in team-fights. It is reducing incoming damage to your team by 20% and whenever you end the ability, it deals damage to everyone based on the damage absorbed. This is what makes the skill very strong. Vengeful Maelstrom (R) will deal significant damage if you're able t. The downside of this ability is that most often times the fight will move out of the ultimate, so you need to position yourself in such a way that the ability will absorb as much damage as possible. This skill is sort of similar to Nunu’s ultimate, but less people realize it will hurt in the end. In fights, you have to make the decision of leaving it on to negate more damage, or burst down a low target quickly.
