Description and Role
Nautilus' role is to be a very disruptive tank in front, pulling out their carries to your carries. He can slow, stun and snare so use all of your crowd control effects to your maximum benefit. You should always want to be stunning a carry and slowing or snaring any tanks that wants to get to your carries. Nautilus can serve as an initiator with his Dredge Line or Depth Charge. What makes Nautilus so tanky will generally be CDR and Health to boost up his shield even more, the resists from your items are just icing on the cake to protect the shield from breaking.
Lore
"When consumed by utter darkness, there is nothing left but forward." -Nautilus.
Once, Nautilus was a sailor commissioned by the Institute of War to explore the uncharted reaches of the Guardian's Sea. This expedition took him deep into unknown waters where he and his crew found a vast section of black oozing liquid that none of the crew could identify. Though their job was to investigate anything new that the found, no man aboard was willing to brave the murk except Nautilus. Only moments after he donned the hulking diver's suit and climbed over the ship's rail, something lurking in the muck grabbed hold of him. He clung to the side of the ship, but the thing below pulled him fiercely, rocking the entire ship. The other sailors grew afraid and made a terrible decision. As he stared and pled for help, they wrenched his grip free of the rail. He tumbled into the ink, grabbing the anchor in futile desperation. Dark tendrils enveloped him and he could do nothing but watch as the dimming outline of his ship faded away. Then everything went black.
When Nautilus woke, he was something... different. The great iron suit had become a seamless shell around him, concealing whatever awful truth lay inside. All the details of his memory seemed fuzzy and indistinct but one fact remained clear: he was left here, alone in the sunless depths, to die. In his hands he still clutched the anchor that belonged to the men who had condemned him. Having no other purpose, he took this clue and trudged - too heavy to swim or run - in search of answers. He wandered without direction or sense of passing time in what felt like an eternal dream. By the time he stumbled upon the shores of Bilgewater, he could find no traces of the Institute, but the summoners refused to relinquish the names of the others they commissioned. By then Nautilus had learned about the League of Legends and there he saw an opportunity to discover and punish those responsible for the time and life he lost.

I've been running Nautilus Top lane Quite a bit and Seem to be on a very good winning trend. Despite one of the Con's being 'Doesn't scale well with attack speed' I have found that Nautilus Works very well with a Wits End esp against a top like shen or other AP damage dealing Top lanes. I start with a Regrowth and one pot and then build the regrowth into a philo on my first back which I also try to get boots and a ward. The next back is follwed up with a HoG and if possible boots two and more wards. I then build accordingly to their team , I highly prefer building a wits end especially if their team's strongest damage dealer(s) are magic based, If their the Enemy team's Only AP is their mid (and especially if they aren't doing good) I prefer buidling a Phage --> Frozen Mallet Before Building Wits. If my team is losing or the game is very close I Build an Aegis to help the team out in teamfights. All in All, I've found out that Nautilus top isn't one of the common top picks and is also in some essence hard to counter because of it; the reason being many people See Nautilus picked and Unless there is another jungler picked early off they assume that Nautilus is most likely going to be jungling, this is not always true but it does make Nautilus hard to counter the same way it used to make Lee sin Top lane Hard to counterpick before Lee Sin toplane became well known thanks to Voyboy at Hannover. I tend to Run 9/21/0 masteries as Toplane Naut with Movespeed Quints Attack Speed Marks Armor Seals and MR Glyphs, I prefer Running Ignite and Flash as a large portion of Kills in lanes will come from ignite especially in 1v1 fights, and Flash is almost a Must have spell for a few reasons, It can be the Flash over the wall that saves your life, the flash past enemy minions so you can Land your Q, or the flash just to get away after turret diving, Flash is Very Useful on Nautilus. Some people prefer using ghost, but Because I quite frequently Build a Frozen Mallet All I need is One hit on them and with all of nautilus's CC he already has the enemy Shouldn't get away (unless they are Olaf in which case ur fucked :P ) .
The way I play Nautilus top lane: Nautilus in most cases has to wait till the other top lane either gets aggressive or goes for a last hit in order to trade as Naut is too slow to chase down trades and by that point takes more damage from minions to make it worth while. But when the time comes Start with a Basic Attack Immediately Followed up by a W (as it resets your attack timer) and then an E, by this point if the other top lane (in most cases) choses to fight back you've already chunked down a portion of their hp and shielded yourself from their damage winning you the trade. The times you will lose trades as Nautilus is when you chose to continue fighting after your W and E have been used because Naut (early game especially) doesn't fare too well because of his large Cooldown times combined with his low basic daget you mage after the passive has been used and his low attack speed in 1v1 trades especially after his moves are off Cooldown. When going for the kill you should note that Nautilus isn't very Kill Capable (1v1) untill level 6 when he gets his Ulti, If timed right when they are at 40% or less hp Ulti Combined with Ignite Combined with an E Can quite often gather kills.
Jungling Portion:
The only thing I'd reccommend swapping out for the people trying to jungle Nautilus is to just stick with the Basic Cloth and 5 Pots. the only problem with starting cloth armor instead of Regrowth is that you have to work a little harder to get your Philo than you normally would, and if you still plan on building either an Aegis or a Frozen Heart the Cloth armor is not wasted. I've found that I can clear the entire jungle hit level 4 and gank with about 75% health left and maybe 1 pot Depending on how good of a pull I got at blue.
-Tip for newer junglers, Nautils is a SLOW Jungler So i would Highly Reccommend Asking your team for a Hard leash at blue buff So you can rush your red buff right after and get a quick Level 3 Double buff so you can surprise the other team with early ganks from a jungler that is percieved as being Slow and a jungler that doesn't gank as early as the 3:00 mark with all 3 moves. I've been able to net quite a few First bloods because Unlike Lee sin or Shaco a lot of people aren't prepared for a quick gank from a Nautilus.
-If you can afford it, dont pick nautilus early in the champ selection, because if they pick a strong counter jungler Nautilus will Suffer Greatly from it as he is a slow jungler.
I Dont Consider Myself a Professional Player in Any way I Have just been loving Nautllus and am trying to find an uncommon top lane that does good compared to a lot of common toplane picks, If anyone has any suggestions / comments feel free to post them. thanks :)
Wits End is actually quite decent. Autoattacks that land on a target already afflicted with Titan's Wrath will proc an extra damage tick fully independant from the DoT, provided your shield is still up. Makes an attack speed based Nautilus effin terrifying. Try Wits End along with Nashor's Tooth and / or Guinsoo's Rageblade, then full tank items, and you're up for some laughs, even if it's not an actual solid build.
There should be no specific build for nauti. He is really strong champ by its nature. You can either go Full tank, Support tank, Bruiser, Tanky AP or even pure AP/AD.
He can jungle mid or solotop and with a help from a jungler every lane should be won because the amount of CC.
You ever get the feeling that you have to get away from it all? When the life you have just isnt enought.
I mean, you go to the college, you get a job and one day you wake up and you realize it'll be like this until the day you die.
There's a whole world out there you haven't seen. So i'm gone, i'm out of here.
I mean, search for something different, something more beautiful, and ok I confess: something more DANGEROUS.

Sounds legit.
Here is a tip when using the Titan's Wrath sheild in the jungle. Use it before you get to the harder minions, that way the CD already starts counting down, and you can use it again near the end of the battle. If a teammate pulls blue, then you will have enough health to kill red later.
I personaly take 9/21/0 masteries, for the extra CD reduction and Mpen, and take the CDR/level runes as well. This allows me to use Depth charge once per minute, ganking frequently. Sometimes i can use it 2 or 3 times in a single teamfight. And i prefer ghost to flash.
If you are having trouble jungling I suggest you start with boots and 3 health pots instead, keep in mind not to use your health pot until after your sheild has been broken.
Also the item build i use is philosopher's stone (sold for final item at endgame), Mercury Treads, Rod of Ages, Warmogs, Rylai's, either (thornmail or sunfire cape), and either (banshe's veil, Force of Nature, or Abyssal scepter)
This build will give him over 5k health and maximize his sheild and provide him with enough survivability and AP to do a very significant amount of damage in teamfights. The Rod of Ages also provides with an essencial boost to mana.
Rod of Ages and Warmog's are good to take early because they provide the greatest boost and are farmable items which require time to maximize, so its good to get them early.
The main thing people that play with or against Nautilus should know is that Nautilus is horrible at retreating. If you see him engage the enemy, he is commited. I very rarely ever escape alive. Dredge line, is a horrible escape tool because you need to stop for close to a second to use it, during that time the enemy can catch up to you and stun you. The only time it is good to escape is when you have a heavy slow on yourself or an exhaust.
However i generally save dredge line for when the enemy tries to escape. Initiate with your ulti, then close the gap on foot and slow and stun, and then once he is finally trying to escape from your burst, throw down the dredge line and deny him the oportunity. By that time you can usually pop down another slow and get another stun off with your attack. Remember to pop your sheild up before you begin the attack so that you can get it off again a second time during the duel. Very rarely does anything survive the burst barage.
are u serious? doesnt scale well with attack speed?
i love geting an early wits end on him such a fast clear with max shield splash and can cc fast especially since his shiled and dredge line reset his attack timer
"Does not scale well with attack speed"
wow
Thoughts on taking him top?
Holding back on using your W after you root them with your passive allows you to reset your autoattack timer and net another quick autoattack, plus by the time you hit that 2nd attack, the snare would have worn out and you could automatically hit your E.
I love this guide and i love the champion even more, thank you SYDTKO and riot.
I run attack speed marks scaling MR glyphs as well as replacing hp/lvl masteries with vigor and indomitable. Start regrowth + pot, and then the route is blue - > wolves - > wraiths - > golems -> wolves -> red. Reasoning behind this is if i do wolves first i find im alot lower hp than just starting at blue, the only time im low health is just after mini golems but regrowth + vigor regain alot of hp by the time i get back to red. If i get counter jungled, well i just adapt.
It's not a bad option.
Hello, i'm french, so my english isn't perfect at all. :p
Nautilus's Titan's Wrath scale VERY WELL with attack speed, not too much, btw. the dot don't really last 2 secs, but proc 2 times. 1 time just after the hit, and 1 more time 1 secs after, so, if nautilus has less than 1 attack/sec, that's potentially better to get closer to 1 attack/sec.
So, 40% attack speed don't give too much ASPD, not like phantom dancer, for example.
(sorry if my english isn't perfect :( )
I use your build. There's problem that I can't even finish the jungling with W for 1st level.
If no team mate attract the monsters, I can't even finish jungling. The monsters kill me. After jungling the Wraith, I'm only with less than 100 health.
Get help from your teammates, his jungle clear will be very bad early every time. You could also run attack speed reds.
Okay, I need help. For some reason I simply cannot clear with this build. I have tried sevral times (with a simple leash) and still manage to die to redbuff. Do I need a hard leash?
I am even running ap quints (can't afford the movespeed atm) and still can not clear with regrowth. I feel like a noob or something lol.
