Smartcast – Keyboard set-up
When playing Vlad, you’ll want to use smart cast for his Transfusion (Q) ability. The main reason for this is because you’ll want to cast it immediately upon emerging from your Sanguine Pool (W) ability. This could save you a few milliseconds, the difference between healing from a Transfusion (Q), killing the enemy champion or even dying.
The Laning Phase
Vladimir is actually quite weak in the early stages of the game, but that doesn't mean you should be completely passive. A lot of players have said that you can't really do anything until level nine, it's somewhat true that he scales really well with levels, but he can still sometimes harass opponents into basing before level nine. When you play Vladimir in the laning phase of a game you shouldn't ever use his Transfusion (Q) ability on anything other than heroes unless you are in need of healing and you're quite sure that if they come forward for aggression the ability would be available again and not on cooldown. If they force you away from XP on Vladimir, you're going to lose the matchup. Also, try to avoid using your Tides of Blood (E) to stack until you get some Spell Vamp to help sustain your health.
Playing out the early game
Vladimir has probably the strongest laning in the game once he gets to level 9 due to the immense amount of healing potential from his Transfusion (Q) ability. Though, things generally turn around for Vladimir in almost every matchup once he reaches level 9. Don't be afraid to counter an opponent by starting with defensive items as Vladimir will ultimately will outscale them.
Vladimir, like most other highly sustainable champions, is very strong at split pushing as they're almost always guaranteed to outlast in a one versus one battle. Whittling down an enemy champion means their jungler is forced to come out and hold the lane, preventing them from ganking or obtaining gold from jungling, so there is inherent strength in just being able to outlast your opponent. This creates a lot of pressure for your team, and will force enemies into sending 2 or more champions to deal with you. This will allow your team to gain more global objectives, while you are able to skirt around the edge of danger with 2 or more escape abilities.
Maximizing your AoE abilities
Vladimir is an extremely potent teamfighter due to his AoE abilities, which all come with sustain. This allows him to deal tons of damage and soak up a lot of damage at the same time. With his insanely short cooldowns, he has the damage potential mirroring a second AD Carry for your team. Always remember to have 4 stacks of your tides of blood before any teamfight, to maximize your potential dps.
Vladimir's role in a teamfight, is to deal sustained damage to the enemy squishies, while tanking as much aggro as possible. You can dive into the enemy back line and use your ultimate while dealing as much damage as possible, forcing the opponent to focus you. In the meantime, you can attempt to tank as much damage as you can and activate Sanguine Pool whenever you feel the need to drop aggro to stay alive.
Dominating the laning phase
Vladimir is perceived to be an extremely weak early lane phase champion. However, this is not always the case. During level 1-6, you should always save Transfusion to harrass the enemy AFTER the opposing laner uses your abilities on you. Before that, you should harass with your auto attacks, only using Transfusion after the enemy has blown his cooldowns and has no way to counter harass. By managing your abilities perfectly, you should always have a health advantage over your opponent, and will have a chance to solo kill them after you hit 6 if you manage to whittle them down to around 70% hp.
Tips and Tricks
Tides of Blood Brush Checking
Much like other AoE abilities in League of Legends, you can use Tides of Blood to check if an enemy is lurking within the brushes. However, you should be very aware of what enemy champions you are against as the range on Tides of Blood is not very big If you're tanky enough not get killed off an engage, it can be quite useful.
Dodging crowd control in the middle of the animation
As stated before, use your pool to dodge any skills that would crowd control you. You are able to dodge any form of crowd control in the middle of their animation. Therefore, you should always keep this in mind and abuse this to soak as much crowd control for your team as possible.
If an enemy champion attempts to gank you, make sure to save your pool until the moment the enemy decides to use their gap closing ability. This will enable you to slow an enemy who has no chance of getting closer to you, while gaining a minor speed boost in pool form as well. One mistimed pool can cause your death, thus you should always keep this in mind.
Synergies and Counters
Vladimir synergises with champions who have AoE abilities, especially those with crowdcontrol. This is because the main weakness of Vladimir is his lack of CC. If there is afriendly champion who is able to lock down the enemy team, Vladimir will have free reign over the teamfights to deal as much damage as he possibily can. Additionally, Vladimir's Ultimate is an AoE spell which amplifies all damage dealt, allowing his teammates to deal more damage in an AoE.
