The Laning Phase
Xerath's early game is not bad at all. He can farm and harass pretty safely. In almost every matchup, Xerath has the range advantage. Combo E + Q + 1 auto attack is good early damage. Start to harass more at level 5, when your Q is at rank 3. Try to kill your enemey as soon as you hit level 6.
Ignite makes it even easier to kill your opponent at level 6.
If you run Teleport, try to use it when ever it's possible and when you see the opportunity to pick up kills.
Early Game Tips
- Always be aware of, where the enemy Jungler is if you want to play aggressive.
- If you play against bad early champions like Nidalee, push her to her tower. She will have a bad time at cs'ing.
- Add auto attacks to your combos, for better harass.
- If you have no level 1 wards don't play too aggressive, Xerath has no escape.
- W + Q combos from outside of the fog of war, will ive you an easy almost never missing harass. I will show you some poke spots down below.
- Try to time the enemy Flash. Tell your Jungler for how long the enemy Flash is down, for an easy gank.
- If your lane opponent is leaving the lane, push the lane as hard as you can.
- And never forget to buy WARDS
- Sight Ward

Laning kills while being in the fog of war (Gifs)
As you can see here, it's very easy to pick up low health enemys. When using your W in the fog of war, they won't even see it coming.
When it comes to the mid game, you should already have
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Athene's Unholy Grail
- Rabadon's Deathcap
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Rabadon's Deathcap
- Void Staff
Always instantly push your and try to make something happen.
Help out other lanes and try to roam as much as you can.
If you see an enemy that is pretty low, use his W and try to kill him from the fog of war. THEY NEVER SEE IT COMING.
Always have wards around your mid lane, when you start to roam. If the enemy mid and the enemy Jungler seeing that you are moving bot, your gank can change fast into a 3vs4. Always be aware of counterganks.
Positioning at Dragon
Before you and your team position for dragon, keep an eye on your mana pool. With Xerath's poke damage, controlling objectivs is pretty easy. You can easily poke from out of the fog of war and zone the enemys. If you have a blue buff, even better. Just harass as much as you can, while your team is warding or doing dragon.

Pushing and taking turrets is where Xerath shines. His poke and potential to pick up kills from far away is very good. Same for controlling dragon or baron, harass them as much as you can. But important is, that you must be aware of enemy champions with a hard engage. This will stop you from poking and can catch you off guard. If you manage to hit a stun on one of the enemy carrys, burst him instantly. He will be probably dead without flash or barrier. Also don't be afraid of using your ultimate. If you see that the enemys are grouped at their tower, just use your ultimate. Most of the times you will get a free tower. After you found a good poking spot, ward around it. That is very important, so that you won't get surprised by assassins or sneaky Lux bindings.
Poke Positioning while sieging Turrets
Xerath's late game is very strong. You can kill people from very far away and they won't expect it. Most people can't deal with his range. Hide behind walls to catch someone off. Again be aware of hard engages or assassins, you aren't very tanky. If they catch you, you are instantly dead without Zhonya's Hourglass. Buying wards is like always very important, specially if you have still 1 slot for a item. Poking with wards is just so much safer.
Having control over baron, is one of the most important things in the late game. Try to catch people, who are trying to ward the baron pit. After level 16, you will do so much damage. Again don't be afraid of using your ultimate. With 40% cdr (blue buff + 1 cdr item), your ultimate is on a pretty low cooldown.
It is very easy to kill someone while being in your W form, when the enemy flash is down. As you can see here, I just needed 2 Q's and 2 charges of my ultimate to kill Syndra from out of the baron pit.
Very similar to the mid game. You will harass a lot, but with much more damage. A lot of times, you can snipe the enemy carrys without even using your stun from behind walls (R + Q + R + R). But if you get caught in the late game while being in W form, can cost you the game. The deathtimers are so high, that you can't allow this to happen.
Xerath has 3 things to do during teamfights.
1. Try to snipe the enemy carrys.
If you manage to hit both Carrys with all of your AOE damage, the fight is pretty much won
2. Try to hit as many enemys as possible with Q and R
If you see that the enemys are grouped, DROP EVERYTHING YOU HAVE ON THEM. Xerath's damage while being in W is so ridiculous.
3. E + Q combo the closest target.
It gives your team some time. You can protect yourself and your AD Carry.
But also in teamfights, use your Q as often as you cant. It doesn't matter if in W form or without, just spam your Q. When your team is kiting back, also just spam Q Q Q Q Q. After kiting back, your ultimate can be up again and you can turn this fight around again. You also can use your W to reposition yourself in teamfights. But as always be aware of enemy assassins, if they reach you need to burst them or you will die in a few seconds.
