The Laning Phase
Xerath's early game is not bad at all. He can farm and harass pretty safely. In almost every matchup, Xerath has the range advantage. Combo E + Q + W is good damage. You can go all in at level 2 and you can start to deal huge damage at level 3 when you can start making combo's. Poke with Q as much as you can as you got enough mana regeneration from your passive. When you are level 6, do the E + Q + W + R combo or W + E + Q + R combo to kill your enemy!
Ignite makes it even easier to kill your opponent at level 6.
If you run Teleport, try to use it when ever it's possible and when you see the opportunity to pick up kills.
Early Game Tips
- Always be aware of, where the enemy Jungler is if you want to play aggressive.
- If you play against bad early champions like Nidalee, push her to her tower. She will have a bad time at cs'ing.
- Add auto attacks to your combos, for better harass.
- W + Q combos from outside of the fog of war, will give you an easy almost never missing harass. Below a fellow League of Legends player LeiSuReCris has shown these spots in the lane, please do not look at the spells, they are outdated, the poking spots still count!
- Try to time the enemy Flash. Tell your Jungler for how long the enemy Flash is down, for an easy gank.
- If your lane opponent is leaving the lane, push the lane as hard as you can.
- Use your auto attacks on the opponent to regenerate extra mana. If you do this effectively you can spam your spells.
- And never forget to buy WARDS
- Sight Ward
- Ruby Sightstone
- Vision Ward
- Warding Totem (Trinket)
Always instantly push your and try to make something happen.
Help out other lanes and try to roam as much as you can.
If you see an enemy that is pretty low, use your ultimate! With that range of yours there is no escape.
Always have wards around your mid lane, when you start to roam. If the enemy mid and the enemy Jungler seeing that you are moving bot, your gank can change fast into a 3vs4. Always be aware of counterganks.
Pushing and taking turrets is where Xerath shines. His poke and potential to pick up kills from far away is very good. Same for controlling dragon or baron, harass them as much as you can. But important is, that you must be aware of enemy champions with a hard engage. This will stop you from poking and can catch you off guard. If you manage to hit a stun on one of the enemy carrys, burst him instantly. He will be probably dead without flash or barrier. Also don't be afraid of using your ultimate. If you see that the enemys are grouped at their tower, just use your ultimate. Most of the times you will get a free tower. After you found a good poking spot, ward around it. That is very important, so that you won't get surprised by assassins or sneaky Lux bindings
Xerath's late game is very strong. You can kill people from very far away and they won't expect it. Most people can't deal with his range. Hide behind walls to catch someone off. Again be aware of hard engages or assassins, you aren't very tanky. If they catch you, you are instantly dead without Zhonya's Hourglass. Buying wards is like always very important, specially if you have still 1 slot for a item. Poking with wards is just so much safer.
Having control over baron, is one of the most important things in the late game. Try to catch people, who are trying to ward the baron pit. After level 16, you will do so much damage. Again don't be afraid of using your ultimate. With 40% cdr (blue buff + 1 cdr item), your ultimate is on a pretty low cooldown.
Just use your Q and E all the time to poke the enemy down at their tower. You might also use R to weaken them so they have to retreat and you can take down the tower, it's stronger however to use your ultimate to just finish them off.
In teamfights Xerath only has to poke, poke, poke and poke. Since you can cast Q while moving, Xerath has gained loads of mobility compared of how he was played in the past. Stay at long distance, use your E to stun one and hit your Q and W. Just poke even more till they are dead. Use your ultimate if they run away from you. You can use your E on people who are trying to engage on you as well, this will ensure your team not to be engaged on if you don't want to. When you have Rylai's Crystal Scepter you can slow down enemies. This will reduce the change of you being engaged on successfully, as well as allowing your team to engage as well!
