A little about me: I have always gravitated towards support champions that can dish out a lot of damage while still helping out with traditional support responsibilities such as peeling and warding. I started playing LoL in pre-season 4, and in season 4 I hovered around Platinum for a long while. Then I discovered Zyra and quickly rose to Diamond 2 by playing almost exclusively Zyra. I have peaked at Diamond 1 in season 5 playing almost exclusively Zyra support.
As of writing this, (11/14/14), season 4 has just ended and I have over 200 Zyra games with about a 60% win percentage.
I enjoy Zyra for the damage she provides and her playstyle (staying safe and killing people without having to run in) which meshes extremely well with how I naturally play the game (when I have to play a tank, I usually just run away...) If you are hyper-aggressive and always in the middle of fights, Zyra may not be for you! An interesting fact is Zyra's average deaths per game. It is definitely above the average.

Below is a typical match history for me. (7/20/2015).
Description and Role
Zyra is a high damage support with great AoE CC. She is both a lane bully and a late-game terror with the only downside being her difficulty in staying alive. She is a great pick in games with beefy tanks or when you need strong disengage.
Zyra is a support where you don't have to rely on your ADC to succeed. If you end up stealing kills, they are not wasted as Zyra is capable of outputting insane damage at any time between early game and late game. Capable of great ranged harass and a fairly long auto-attack range, Zyra can give your AD carry a lot of room to farm in lane and her CC and late-game AoE damage can carry your team to victory!
She does have a very big weakness in that she is extremely easy to kill. Also, due to the nature of her harass, she will naturally push the lane. Couple this with her low mobility and it is very easy to die early game, snowballing the lane against you. Success requires very good positioning, running exhaust against assassins, and vision, which is very difficult to obtain since she can easily get one-shot while trying to ward the jungle. The motto for this guide is "Don't die and win".
Longing to take control of her fate, the ancient, dying plant Zyra transferred her consciousness into a human body for a second chance at life. Centuries ago, she and her kind dominated the Kumungu Jungle, using thorns and vines to consume any animal that set foot in their territory. As the years passed, the animal population steadily died off. Food became increasingly scarce, and Zyra could only stand by helplessly as the last of her kin withered away. She thought she would perish alone, until the appearance of an unwary sorceress presented her with an opportunity for salvation.
It was the first time in years Zyra had sensed a creature wander so close. Hunger drew her to the sorceress, but some other, deeper instinct compelled her. She enveloped the woman in thorns with ease, but as she savored this final meal, foreign memories invaded her thoughts. She saw great jungles of metal and stone where humans and animals thrived. Potent magic surged through her vines, and she devised an elegant but risky plan to survive. Using the woman's memories, Zyra poured her newfound magic into the creation of a human-shaped vessel. She didn't know what sort of world awaited her, but she had nothing left to lose. When Zyra opened her eyes, she was overwhelmed by the raw power ready at her fingertips. It wasn't until she noticed the shriveled remains of the plant she once was that she realized how vulnerable she had become. If this body died, there would be no network of vines to retreat through, no roots to regrow her... but she felt truly alive. She beheld the world for the first time as animals did, and a dark smile crept across her lips. She was reborn, and there was so much now within her grasp.
