- Mana Potion
With trinkets, you don't really need any green wards in soloQ. Spellthief's is very important for the harass, gold generation, and mana regen. Your spells proc it as well as each attack of your plants, making it a very good item on Zyra. To complete your initial purchase, I suggest buying 3 potions (or 4 if you have the utility mastery). Whether you go 2 HP 1 mana or the reverse depends on the lane matchup. If you are ever unsure, I suggest going 2 HP 1 mana to be safe. A low HP Zyra is a Zyra that is about to die. I discuss what to buy on first and second backs in the items section of this guide.
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Haunting Guise
Late Game Build Purchases
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Liandry's Torment
- Void Staff
- Ruby Sightstone
- Vision Ward
Mid-game purchases depend a lot on the match. When all is going well, rush sightstone, haunting guise, and sorc boots. If they have a really fed AP, I might consider getting Aegis (although it is MUCH better if your jungler purchases this item). Then you want to either get Morellos for the extra damage and CDR or upgrade to liandry's if they have a lot of high-HP tanks. If you are behind, I recommend skipping the morellonomicon and rushing liandries (into voidstaff), as that gives extra health as well as damage based on their health (regardless of how strong you are). Morellos is mostly a snowball luxury item for Zyra support, in my opinion.
Try to always keep 1-2 pink wards in your inventory for dragons and/or barons (or use them defensively in your jungle if you are behind). If you get really ahead, you could consider a deathcap, zhonyas, DFG or rylai's, but usually I build like this: Sightstone -> sorc shoes -> haunting guise-> morellos -> liandries ->voidstaff -> pinks pinks pinks. However, I will often rush liandries before morellos if I am behind.
You may have noticed I never upgrade my spellthief's edge. Frost queen's claim is an OK item, but it is very situational. I usually don't feel like I need it, but there are cases where the slow is very useful if you are lacking engage or if their team relies on movement speed (as opposed to gap closers) for engage. Often I find the slow from my E plants to be sufficient. Also, since Zyra is more of a damage-oriented support (as opposed to utility), and sightstone and pinks already take up two spots, you need to get rid of it to get the amazing trio of liandries / morellos / voidstaff. I would not recommend getting frostfang unless you plan on getting Frost Queen's claim. You pay 500 gold for 5 AP, 25% mana regen, and gold generation increase. However, In almost all games I play, the max I make from spellthief's is 500 gold (not counting the GP10, which doesn't change for frostfang), so even in these long games, frostfang would only pay for itself, and it's better to get stronger earlier items (sorc boots, haunting guise, sightstone...) Also, see Inverted Composer's math about upgrading to Frostfang here.
Other situational items that I purchase (always after the core build given above):
- Twin Shadows
- Banner of Command
- Zhonya's Hourglass
- Rylai's Crystal Scepter
- Boots of Mobility
Zhonya's Hourglass: I rush this against full AD comps or when I'm ahead against an assassin-heavy comp (kat, rengar, talon, etc...) It is really expensive to get so you can only really get it when ahead.
Banner of command: I purchase this item when I am really behind in lane and want to be a more traditional support, and less focused on dealing damage. Even against heavy AP teams, I ask my jungler to purchase this (unless I am behind). Also, this can be a very useful item to deal with side waves. Usually it's the top/mid/adc's job to manage side waves, but sometimes you need to take control of the flow of the game and do it yourself! Plus, the extra gold income from the banner'd minion is nice.
Mobility boots: See above.
Twin Shadows: I'm experimenting with this instead of Morellos. Similar stats (slightly less CDR, no mana regen) but mana regen is less important late game (and can buy potions early game) and it really helps with some of Zyra's core weaknesses (facechecking, mobility, engaging). More info on this later!
Rylai's: I usually only get this against heavy damage teams with a lot of mixed damage where I just want AP. The reason I'm more reluctant to buy this item compared to most Zyra players is that 100% of her skills are AoE, so you never get the full slow. Furthermore, Zyra's E plants already have a slow, and these should be everywhere in teamfights, so I feel it's a bit redundant. The HP is nice though, as well as getting your Q plants to slow (and thus increase the liandries damage).
Deathcap: I may get this as my last item when I'm filthy rich. Otherwise it isn't worth it. It really only is effective when you are already building a lot of AP and Zyra focuses on penetration over AP. Even if you get this, don't get it until after voidstaff. Still, I prefer Zhonya's as a heavy AP item.
Luden's echo: Nerfed in 5.11, I don't think it was good even before the nerf. The mobility is nice, but could be obtained from Twin Shadows. Zyra doesn't have enough spell casts / movement to justify the purchase. Get penetration/cdr first.
