With trinkets, you don't really need any green wards in soloQ. Spellthief's is very important for the harass, gold generation, and mana regen. Your spells proc it as well as each attack of your plants, making it a very good item on Zyra. To complete your initial purchase, I suggest buying 3 potions (or 4 if you have the utility mastery). Whether you go 2 HP 1 mana or the reverse depends on the lane matchup. If you are ever unsure, I suggest going 2 HP 1 mana to be safe. A low HP Zyra is a Zyra that is about to die. I discuss what to buy on first and second backs in the items section of this guide.
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Haunting Guise
A very big question among supports is what to buy on your first back. It is very important to have potions whenever you back. I usually try to keep 2 of each early and then 0-2 after that depending on how the lane is going, how long I am staying in lane, etc... Zyra has three attractive options. Boots, sightstone, and frostfang. All of these are very helpful to Zyra but the wrong buy at the wrong time can be very hurtful to your pressure.
I get sightstone first when the lane is very one-sided in our favor. In that case, you don't need the extra combat stats or safety from frostfang and boots, and the most important thing is that you don't get ganked. Sightstone allows you to not only ward river and tribrush, but it also lets you place deep wards (when it is safe!) which are immensely helpful.
I get frostfang first when the lane is very even or if I am getting pushed in. The combat stats are really nice, the gold helps a lot, and as long as you and your carry can manage your trinkets well, you still have relatively good protection from ganks.
I get boots in situations against engage supports, where mobility and dodging skillshots is incredibly important and without boots, I would die. Otherwise I usually get boots last among these three items.
The rest of the above items are explained below, under "end-game build".
Late Game Build Purchases
- Sorcerer's Shoes
- Liandry's Torment
- Void Staff
- Ruby Sightstone
- Vision Ward
Mid-game purchases depend a lot on the match. When all is going well, rush sightstone, haunting guise, and sorc boots. If they have a really fed AP, I might consider getting Aegis (although it is MUCH better if your jungler purchases this item). Then you want to either get Morellos for the extra damage and CDR or upgrade to liandry's if they have a lot of high-HP tanks. If you are falling behind, I would probably just skip Morellos and rush liandries, as that will give you damage no matter how much AP you have, as it scales off of enemy HP, and synergizes well with your plants.
Try to always keep 1-2 pink wards in your inventory for dragons and/or barons (or use them defensively in your jungle if you are behind). If you get really ahead, you could consider a deathcap, zhonyas, DFG or rylai's, but usually I build like this: Sightstone -> sorc shoes -> liandries -> morellos -> situational AP item (usually voidstaff) -> pinks pinks pinks.
You may have noticed I sell my frostfang. Frost queen's claim is an OK item, but it is very situational. I usually don't feel like I need it, but there are cases where the slow is very useful if you are lacking engage or if their team relies on movement speed (as opposed to gap closers) for engage. Often I find the slow from my E plants to be sufficient. Also, since Zyra is more of a damage-oriented support (as opposed to utility), and sightstone and pinks already take up two spots, you need to get rid of it to get the amazing trio of liandries / morellos / voidstaff.
When you are considering whether to remove the extra pink wards and replace them with another item, ask yourself this: "What would benefit me more? The advantages the item would give me in the teamfight or vision control?" Often it's vision control, but depending on the game the extra item could make the difference.
Wondering about the newer / updated season 5 items? In short, I think building full damage is optimal for Zyra support right now, but here are my specific opinions why. Righteous glory: a tank item great for engages. Not too useful for Zyra unless you don't want damage. Banner of Command: makes it easier to siege. Zyra has no problems sieging so I don't think this item is necessary either. Ohmwrecker: another siege item; see above.
