IEM Quarterfinal #2: SK vs aAa
IEM World Championships Hannover
Quarterfinal #2 (best of 3): SK vs aAa
March 8, 2012 (Nautilus Patch: post-hotfix)
I don't know a lot about aAa but I do know some things about SK. Last time I saw SK at Kiev I said that I didn't think they could compete with real teams because I feel like they are just a group of better than average solo-queuers and thats why they can make it out of group stages but never with an event. Looking at their performance coming out of Group B I would definitely say that they are more of a force to be reckoned with now, going 4-1 losing to only M5 who went 5-0 is impressive. I do however know that there is some kind of European rivalry betwen SK and aAa and that whenever they meet aAa seems to win despite skill. Sometimes I feel like certain teams are like pokemon and despite overall skill they just have weakness against other teams, in this case SK is Pikachu and aAa is Onyx, which isnt impossible for a Pikachu to win but it is unlikely. But we will have to see if my theory is correct and the only way to do that is to see what happened in the games!

Gameplay Guide - How to Escape ELO Hell
About the Author: Zig
Hi, I’m zig a previous member of unR / XXX (pre-Crs). I currently play for Team Dynamic [formerly Monomaniac eSports], and I have 3 accounts that are at the platinum mark, here are a few: "TD zig" (2400+), "zig" (2400+), "Shao" (2300+). I’ve seen hundreds of matches and streams from both successful and unsuccessful players, and over time, I’ve learned what it takes to be a winning player in solo queue. I played for TD competitively and now I kind of bounce around teams, I'm too young to play in Season 3 so I'll be playing in the ammeter league in season 3 (should be fun).

Introduction
Let me start off by saying that Elo Hell is defined by many people in many different ways, but for the purpose of this guide, Elo Hell is the range of rating that you are “trapped” at despite your best efforts of try-harding & playing the best that you possibly can.
There are a lot of guides out there explaining how to get out of Elo hell. I’m going to try to explain the journey as simply as possible. You need to be proficient in two different skill-sets – game mechanics is one of them, with the other being people mechanics.
If you’re in a low Elo bracket, you possess neither of these characteristics. If you’re in a mid Elo bracket, you have either a) an insufficient grasp of both skills, or b) a sufficient grasp of one of the two skills. If you’re in a high Elo bracket, this guide probably won’t help you.
Don’t worry – your Elo is not a static value and can change by rethinking attitudes towards the game. It is very possible that you possess the skill to play at a higher level, but you just need a little bit of help to reach the next level. This is where the LoLPro guide comes into play. Read on, for knowledge!

The Ranked Ladders
Before we get into strategy, we must first cover the basics of the rating system & the ranked solo queue ladder. To rank up, you need to win games. Winning will increase your rating, which is measured in Elo. Your initial rating is pegged at 1200. For the first 10 games, your rating gained per game is enhanced at a rate of 3 – 5 times the norm. After your first 10 games, your rating will show on your profile. It will only be visible to others if it is higher than 1249. After 50 wins, your rating gained per game will normalize at +/- 11 – 14 per game, depending on who was favored to win by matchmaking.
Solo queue is only offered in the 5v5 draft mode format, where the players on each team are organized from captain to 5th pick by rating. Matchmaking is random – your chance of being captain is 1 in 5, so don’t rely on this mechanism to rank up. If you leave in champion select, you are awarded the same loss in rating as if you had played & lost the game. To maintain a rating, you must win the same amount of games that you lose. To increase your rating, you must win more games than you lose. And for the purposes of this guide, we will be explaining how to win only in solo queue. Duo queuing will give you a slight advantage if you are well-coordinated with your partner and you lack people skills to get along with 4 teammates (as a duo queuer, you will only need to endure 3 unknown teammates / game).
Excuses, Excuses…
Before we delve into the two different skillsets, we must first break down the walls that will prevent you from learning. The most common excuses all deal with blaming someone, or some factor. Just remember this: everyone gets unlucky at some point. We all have to deal with the same bullshit of some random player getting angry, trolling, griefing, feeding, or just plain being bad. We all deal with the off-days and the other nonsense that makes us play worse (i.e. power outages, hurricanes, whatever).
The point is, everyone can think of some excuse to use, or some factor to blame, but this alone does not stop the best players from climbing the ladder. Many players are stuck with the ‘blame’ mentality, and they will forever be stuck in a low-rated bracket. If you’d like to break out, improve, and ultimately climb the solo queue ladder, read on!

How to AP Carry
AP Carry
An AP Carry is a champion that does damage with ability power versus attack damage. It is also a champion that is responsible for 'carrying' the game or doing the most damage in a team fight. Think of it as the 'star player' in a team game. The quarterback in football, the striker in hockey or the shooter in soccer. The goal of the rest of the team members is to make sure to 'support' or make the Carry shine.
AP Carries do damage with Ability Power, this Ability Power is built-in with the types of spells that they have.
As you can tell the base damage of this spell is done in Magic Damage (opposed to Attack Damage) (85/125/165/205/245 (+{CharAbilityPower}) magic damage Disintegrate's mana cost is refunded if it deals a killing blow).
Let's say that you've accumulated 450 Ability Power during the game. Some of these increases have to do with the per-level gain you get from advancing from level 6 to say 7. In addition you can gain additional Ability Power by purchasing items, see the common items below. In this scenario, if you had maxed out on the Disintegrate spell (meaning that your base spell did 245 damage), then you would do an additional 450 * .7 = 315 Damage. This means total damage of 560. This is not 'true damage' to the enemy, because they can build resistance to your damage to decrease the real damage taken.
Now that you understand how Ability Power champions work, the difference between a regular ability power damage spell and an AP Carry is that an AP Carry's job is to literally carry the team and do the most damage on the team in the way of Ability power. It often does not make sense to have a full team that only does Ability Power Damage, because the enemy team can build resistance and block that damage easily. If some of the champions on the team are doing Attack Damage and others are doing Ability Power Damage, then the enemy team can't afford to build both defenses, they typically pick one or the other.
The AP Carry's job is usually done by a very skilled player, someone with quick reaction times and that definitely uses smart cast to use their abilities. The fraction of a second will determine an amazing player from an average player. They also need to have very good positioning skills. If you are playing as the AP Carry and you die before the rest of the team, then the team will lack damage for the rest of the fight. It is incredibly important that you stay alive. Being in the wrong position and dying early will impact a team fight much more than lets say a support dying.
Lastly, there is a definition of an AP Hyper Carry. These are also champions that do ability power, but they are typically more feeble or weak early game and shine better into late game. Their ratios are built to maximize damage past the 20-25 minute mark. The current meta, taking an AP Carry is very valuable, especially in competitive play - when the games tend to be a bit more passive. Allowing an AP Hypercarry to farm every minion and not die early game can be a certain loss into late game. It is important to ban certain hyper-carries or focus on curtailing their early game to ensure your team does not lose late game because of their incredible scaling.
Key Things to Remember
Remember that farming is always important in every role but it is even more important for a carry. Typically 21 minion kills equals a champion kill. If you are not farming appropriately, you are going to fall that much farther behind in gold.
Remember that based on the type of AP Carry you have will vary the play style that you want to have during the laning phase, during team fights, prior to the 1:40 minute mark (super early game) and even late game. Different champions need to be played differently. When you study an AP Carry - get great at that champion before you move onto the next one.
Blue Buff
It is very important for most AP Carries to get Ancient Blue Golem from the jungle during the course of the game. The Golem spawns at 1:55, but typically (and this depends on the jungler), the first blue buff will go to the Jungler. But every time it respawns (typically around 7:15 on the game clock) - should be given to the AP Carry. The Jungler should ping it for you and tell you to come over and get the buff. In advanced play or more coordinated team play you will want to try and steal the Ancient Blue Golem from the enemy jungle instead of taking your own. This way your team gets two blue buffs instead of one. You can do this by warding the Ancient Blue Golem prior to the 7:15 mark (when it will typically spawn for the enemy team as well, but will vary based on the route of the enemy jungler). When warded, it will be easier for you to try and steal.
Basic Strategy
Your basic strategy is to stay alive in team fights, maximize your damage output. Dying early in team fights is the worst thing you can do.
